International Symposium On Languages and Landscapes of Mobilisation
First public event: International Symposium On Languages and Landscapes of Mobilisation was organised on Gotland from May 31 to June 1, 2023.
On Languages and Landscapes of Mobilisation was the first international event of the On Mobilisation project co-funded by the European Union. The symposium included a roundtable discussion at the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators in Visby on May 31, followed by a guided tour of Gotland’s military heritage on June 1. During these two days, the international project group, artists, researchers, and independent thinkers gathered to discuss how military mobilisation affects language and landscape – both locally on Gotland and from a transnational perspective.
Participants in the Languages of Mobilisation round table included:
• Kalle Brolin, Artist
• Gunilla Almström Persson, Senior Lecturer in Rhetoric and Swedish Language at Stockholm University
• Danae Theodoridou, Artist
This roundtable was organized by the Baltic Art Center (BAC) in collaboration with Uppsala University’s Graduate School on Sustainable Studies (GRASS) and the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators.
Landscapes of Mobilisation was a guided bus tour with architect Gunnar Sillén that took participants from Visby to the architectural remains of Gotland’s military history. Highlights included a visit to Tingstäde Lake to see the fortress-like bulwark submerged since the 12th century and Tingstäde Fortress from the 1st World War.
